Artist Statement

I first decided I wanted to become a writer because I wanted to change the world, but probably not the way you think. I’ve never sought to change the world by leaving my mark on it; I seek to teach others to walk lightly on the earth and leave no mark at all. I grew up in a conservationist household and was raised to be fiercely protective of the environment. Most of my childhood was spent playing in the woods and exploring nature. As a child, I remember looking out the car window and seeing entire sections of forest reduced to clear-cut lots. Looking out over the scarred land, my heart filled with something akin to grief and it ignited the desire within me to do something. I couldn’t fathom why no one cared about what was happening to the trees or how the land would heal.

As an adult, I have come to understand that the lack of ecological knowledge is a symptom of broader socio-economic issues. Climate change is a multi-faceted issue that requires complex solutions and interdisciplinary approaches. In the present climate, responsible environmental stewardship is critical to the health of our world and environmental literacy is more important than ever. Writers have always inspired people to enact change, and during this global crisis, I am committed to bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and everyday citizens through technical writing.
